Deaf Reach Teacher Empowerment Workshops II

Sixty-five teachers and teacher trainees from Deaf Reach branches all over Pakistan attended the Teacher Empowerment Workshop in Karachi, held from July 25 – 30, 2011. The goal of the workshops was to show how the Deaf could be empowered as well as to provide further training for the teachers and strengthen the overall running of Deaf Reach Schools and Training Centers.

Mr. Richard Geary, Executive Director of FESF, opened the workshop with a keynote speech highlighting the potential the Deaf can achieve when they are provided the opportunities. The workshop attendees were very inspired to see examples of successful Deaf people from all around the world and from the Deaf community of Pakistan.

Throughout the week, teachers from each department offered well-made presentations on the best teaching practices for working with the Deaf, and shared the experience, accomplishments and knowledge they have personally gained from working with the Deaf. Each of the Deaf Reach branches were also able to show highlights of achievements of their schools from the previous school year 2010 - 2011.

Topics covered during the workshops were seminars on Deaf Empowerment, Deaf Culture and Awareness, The Importance of Teamwork, Leadership Skills, Communication and Interpersonal Skills, Teachers Professional Conduct.

Other workshop topics included, Guidelines for Teachers, Curriculum contents review, Admission Policy and Assessment, Teacher Trainees Sign Language tests, Teaching Methodology and Resources presentation.

A guest speaker/representative from RUTGERS-WPF also gave a presentation to introduce the concept of LSBE on Child Protection to all the teachers of Deaf Reach.

The week ended on a high note with a closing  ceremony and a delicious lunch at the Sheraton Hotel kindly provided by Mr. Antoine Joignant, General Manager of Sheraton Hotel Karachi. At the closing ceremony, all the attendees received certificates and gifts in appreciation of the efforts they have made in Deaf Reach Schools and Training Centers.
